Using the Active Learning Suite This exercise is designed to enhance your understanding of fundamentals of
optical communications. To use the simulator you must click HERE
and use your SSU email and the password I
provided in class (the password will not be sent via email).
Once you logged onto the simulator, click on Telecommunications
and then Fiber Optics and Photonics. Read the following virtual experiments. Try to understand the basic
idea of the module. Write two questions followed by your complete answer for
EACH of the modules:
- Comparing Copper wired and fiber optics
- Studying dependency of a communication distance light
- Study of total internal reflection
- Determining the angle of acceptance
- Investigation of effects of dispersion
- Study of loss mechanism Parts 1-3 (3 modules)
- exploration of the causes of chromatic dispersion (Part 1-2)
You will NOT receive points if your questions are NOT meaningful,
insightful, sufficiently strong, or clear. For sections which no descriptions are provided, you are
required to read about the topic on your own. Feel
free to play with other modules. Submission: Your submission must include:
- Minimum of 20 questions and answers
- A brief evaluation of the simulator (e.g., was it useful?)
- complete the survey
- Include any errors or suggestions about the simulator
LATE submissions will NOT be accepted. Please bring your hardcopy to class.
